Building Positive Staff Relationships with Visitors, Patients and Staff

1 Twelve Minute Program
All health-care employees

Objectives:

1. To better understand staff inter-relationships
2. To gain an awareness of the impact of negative relationships.
3. To increase positive relationships.

Positive person-to-person relationships are essential to any successful enterprise. Forward-looking industries are placing an increasingly higher priority on the recruitment and retention of employees who evidence positive interpersonal skills. The health care industry is no exception to this trend. This program explains why health care employees need to place more emphasis on the positive aspects of their contacts with patients, visitors and fellow employees. Using a series of six vignettes involving typical situations in which more empathic behavior could have been demonstrated, the program provides opportunity for discussion of positive interpersonal relationships in the health care setting.

Vignettes include:

  • Hurting One's Feelings
  • Personal Problems and Work
  • Lack of Patience
  • Incomplete Communication
