Mastering the Wilderness

12 Fifteen Minute Programs
Grade(s): High School
Curriculum: Outdoor Clubs

Overview:

  • Created to provide the basics to the novice and many useful tips to the experienced. The series covers the "essentials of out-of-doors travel. Living and survival. Not intended to replace on-hand Instruction. It is designed as a learning supplement for use in the classroom or home environment. To achieve the greatest benefit, each part of the series should if possible be followed by formal Instruction and practice sessions. As each segment covers a different topic, it is not necessary to show them in any sequence.
  • Many of the canoeing scenes show the occupants without lifejackets, this was due in large part to the expertise of the paddlers and temperature while filming. We strongly recommend that viewers wear lifejackets at all times. The wearing of lifejackets is dealt with in the last part of the segment "Basic Canoe Handling".
  • Printed scripts of the narration are available as learning aids at nominal cost. Produced In a format for easy reading and note taking, they can be purchased through the Temagami Wilderness Center, P.O. Box 130, Ternagani, Ontario POH 2HO. Telephone 705-569-3733.
