Renaissance In Space

3 Fifteen Minute Programs
Grade(s): Jr./Sr. High
Curriculum: Science/Social Science

Objectives:

  1. To introduce students to the concept of the finite Earth and the role space might play in solving some of the problems related to a finite Earth.
  2. To present a historical perspective of where we are in space, of where we hope to go, how we might get there, and why we want to go.
  3. To serve as an introductory or summary activity for a space unit.

Host, former astronaut, Dr. Brian O'Leary, using on-location, NASA footage, and animation presents a review of the space program, highlighting the major events to give a historical perspective to our exploration and possible colonization of space. Animation is used to suggest how we might colonize space and what benefits we can hope to reap as a result. The last program attempts to illustrate the aesthetic aspects of space via a "simulated" blast-off and orbit.
